ICF Fisherman's Accuracy and Distance             Dry Fly Accuracy

Single Handed Distance                                    Wet Fly Accuracy

Double Handed Distance                                   ICF Skish Accuracy

GENERAL RULES

1. According to the specific rules
for each event, the fly rod must be held in one hand except for Double Handed distance events. It is allowed to achieve fulcrum by putting the rod against the
underarm, but no fastening is allowed. All other techniques are prohibited.

2. A cast is illegal if:
a) The rod is not handled according to the rules.
b) The fly or leader is missing on delivery or the leader is found to be less than 1.80 metres. If the leader is tangled the cast is legal.
c) When any illegal tackle is being used.
d) If during fly accuracy casting the fly touches the water during false casting before final delivery. Tick (that is fly touching the water in front of the caster during false casting) to be called immediately by Judge before next false or delivery cast.
e) When distance casting the fly lands outside of the court.
f) If the line is marked, or is measured along the rod by the caster.

3. Broken or faulty tackle:
a) If the fly or leader is lost, the caster may be assisted by one (1) person at a time, to replace the fly or the leader. Distances and hits before the incident count. After losing two (2) flies (3 flies in F.A.D.) the caster has to stop casting that event. If however the hackle of the fly has separated from the hook, subject to the judges decision, time is stopped, and the caster or his assistant may put on an extra fly. Such changing of the fly is not counted in the restricted number of flies for that event. Time starts again as soon as the fly has been replaced.
b) Assistance, from one person at a time, is allowed in order to stretch out the line or clear tangled line.

4. Determining results: In accuracy casting a hit on the actual target or circle is scored as a hit on the target area inside the target.

5. Fly: Standard tournament flies, size 10, Palmer pattern, hackle diameter 16 - 22 mm. Any colour. Flies to be approved by the organising Division. In all Dry fly events, Fly is required to float and may be treated with floatant.

6. Skip Fly: A fly which first lands outside the target then skips in is an illegal cast and scored accordingly (no score), but if the fly lands inside the target and skips out it is a legal scoring cast.

7. Platform: This shall be 1.20 metres square or if larger shall be marked accordingly and the caster must keep BOTH feet inside this area.

8. Judging: It is the responsibility of the check judge to assist the judge in any way the judge requests, but must also watch and call any "tick" immediately if missed by the judge. He can only comment on the result of a cast if the judge calls "check".

ICF Fisherman's Accuracy and Distance

How it works -

Targets: Land - 3 targets each with 3 concentric rings of respectively 0.60 - 1.20 - 1.80 metres. In the centre a hollow disk of 0.60 metres diameter with 3 cm high, water filled. Disk colour as per I.C.F. Skish Fly accuracy. Target of plastic or cloth, colour green, with white circles up to 2cm wide. If hollow tube targets are used maximum tube diameter 2cm. The distance between targets, land and water, to be 3.50 metres from target centre to target centre.

For men: Target No.1 to the left 11.00 metres, target No.2 13.00 metres, target No.3 to the right 15.00 metres, all measured from target centre to the centre point of the front of the casting box.

For ladies: Same as for men but the distances are as follows.: 8.00 - 10.00 - 12.00 metres.
3 targets each with 3 concentric hollow tube rings of respectively 0.60 - 1.20 - 1.60 metres.

Water - 3 targets each with 3 concentric hollow tube rings of respectively 0.60 - 1.20 - 1.80 metres.

For men: The centre of the nearest target, to the left of the caster, shall be between 10.50 and 12.00 metres from the centre of the front edge of the casting box. The centre of the farthest target to the right of the caster between 14.50 and 16.00 metres. The target in the middle to be placed at an unknown distance between the left and the right.

For ladies: The distance to each target to be shortened by 2.00 metres.

Casting Accuracy Section

Nine cast on targets to be made, in the following order.: 1 - 2 - 3, and 2 - 3 - I and 3 - 1 - 2 three casts each round. Between each round of three targets, caster must reel in line to starting position with fly in hand. Fly line may only be lengthened or shortened during actual false casting. No stripping from the reel allowed before or between casts. When cast on water, ticks count as casts but non-scoring.

Time: 8 consecutive minutes for accuracy and distance sections in all.

Score: From the centre 10 - 6 - 2 points, for hitting respectively inside or on 60 - 120 - 180 cm rings. Maximum score possible 90 points for accuracy.

Casting Distance Section

The same tackle must be used for distance as for the accuracy section, an assistant may pull out the line after the accuracy section, but the time continues to run. The same courts and or platforms are to be used for accuracy and distance.

Court: At 100 metres distance, the court is 50 metres wide, measuring at a right angle to the perpendicular axis from the front centre of the platform.

Score: the two (2) longest distance casts to be added and the sum added to the accuracy score, with 1 metre = 1 point. Fractions are counted.

Regulation Tackle Requirements

Rod:
Any fly rod maximum length 3.00 metres. Standard flyrod rings or guides.

Reel: Standard fly fishing reel or self made reel corresponding to that standard. Reel to take complete line and to be fastened to the rod.

Line: Standard fly line. minimum length 15.00 metres and maximum weight 38 grams for men, 13.50 metres and 34 grams for ladies. Line shall not be marked to measure distance. Metal inlays are prohibited. Backing unrestricted.

Leader: Minimum length 1.80 metres.

Platform: This event - like all fly-casting events - is executed from a start-platform that is 1.5 m long, 1.2 m wide and 0.5 m high. Legend has it that this platform is a relict from older days of the casting sport, when the fly-casts were executed from the footbridges at water crossings.

Tackle commonly used - Many casters use the same gear that they have for the accuracy events. John Waters used a 38 gram T40 Scientific Anglers tournament line and a rod designed by John and made for him by Strudwick.

Single Handed Distance

How it works –

As the name explains, the caster in this event has to cast the tournament fly as far as possible.

Court: Land - At 100 metres distance, the court is 50 metres wide, measuring at a right angle to the perpendicular axis from the front centre of the platform. Platform as for Fly Accuracy events. Water - Platform as for Fly accuracy events, casting parallel to straight line measuring device either floating in the water or rigged on the bank at 90 degrees to the front of the platform.

Measuring distance: On land, from the centre point of the front edge of the platform. On water, from the front edge of the platform along the measuring device and at right angles to the Fly.

Time: 5 minutes. The line may be pulled out outside the court during the casting of the previous caster.

Score: Average of the casters three (3) longest casts to be the casters score.

Regulation tackle requirements -

Rod:
Maximum length 3.00 metres.

Double Handed Distance

How it works –

Similar to the single handed distance event, here the tournament-fly has to be casted as far as possible. But now the rod is up to 5.20 meters long and has to be moved with both hands.

Court: At 100 metres distance, the court is 50 metres wide, measuring at a right angle to the perpendicular axis from the front centre of the platform.

Measuring Distance: Same as for Fly single handed distance.

Time: 7 minutes. Line may be pulled out as for Fly single handed distance.

Score: Same as for Fly single handed distance.

Regulation tackle requirements -

Rod: Maximum length 5.20 Metres.

Reel: Any reel to take complete line and fastened to the rod.

Line: Any line, maximum weight 120 grams, in whole or spliced from separate bits.

Leader: Maximum length 5.20 Metres.

Fly: Standard Salmon tournament fly, size 6.

Tackle commonly used - John Waters used a Talon rod with a bit cut off the tip to stiffen the blank and a T120 gram Scientific Angler tournament line.

Dry Fly Accuracy

How it works -

Method of casting:

1. Casting must be single handed from within the casting box.
2. Competitor must begin with fly in hand and one fly rod length of line out of the rod tip.
3. Fly must be measured to each target in turn whilst false casting.
4. Fly must not be retrieved on water (i.e. to assist measurement). Penalty shall be no score on next cast.
5. At least one false cast shall be made between each try. If no false cast be made then no score will be awarded to that cast.
6. Fly must not touch or tick the water in front of the caster. If fly touches or ticks cast will be scored as no score.

Score:

1. Three (3) successive tries shall be made at each target in order as called by the judge. Such order shall be maintained throughout the event.
2. It shall be the duty of the judge to indicate each target in turn to the competitor if the competitor so wishes.
3. The fly must alight in or on and remain in or on the target until the judge calls the score. If moved from the target before the judge calls the score, no score shall be allowed.
4. At each target the score shall be as follows:

- 1st try perfect 5 points
- 2nd try perfect 3 points
- 3rd try perfect 2 points

Total possible score 50 points.

Time: Time allowed shall be 3 minutes to begin when the fly hits the surface, in or outside the target for the first time. Last cast to be finished and fly to hit the surface before time expires.

Replacement: The fly may be replaced in the casters time.

Regulation tackle requirements

Rod: Ordinary fishing rod of maximum length 3.00 metres. Standard fly rod rings or guides.

Reel: Standard fly fishing reel, or self made reel corresponding to standard. Reel fastened to the rod, line fastened to the reel.

Line: Standard fly fishing line or similar line, minimum length 15.00 metres. Backing unrestricted. Metal inlays prohibited.

Leader: Minimum length 1.80 metres. Diameter optional, but when event is cast on water or in plastic pool the Tippet must be minimum length of 20cm and must be able to pass through a gauge set to .25mm.

Fly: Standard tournament flies, size 10, hackle diameter 16-22mm, to be tied in approved dry fly style, to be approved by the organising Division in any colour. (See General Rules)

Tackle commonly used - Many fly rods used for the accuracy events are a 9 to 9 1/2 foot in length, are in the 10 - 11 weight range and have a fast action. A standard fly reel and a fast-sinking fly-line in one or two weights lower than what the rod is built for are commonly used.

To give you an idea of what tackle our champion casters are using for the accuracy events John Waters used an Aurora Titron 9 foot, 10 weight, rod using a 9 weight Hardy Intermediate line. On very calm days John would use a Talon 9 weight line which is a little lighter than the Hardy. Most casters use leaders about 6 foot to 6 foot 6 inches in length, however John believes these to be too short. John uses a longer leader (7 foot 4 inches) leader for all events as it is slower through the air and allows you to more easily sight the fly in the dry fly. In the Skish and Wet fly events, the longer leader minimises the tendency to splash the fly into the water before the hoop. When the pressure is on, you need to have minimised any margin for error and leader length achieves this.

ICF Skish Accuracy

How it works -

Court:
Platform minimum 1.50 metres long and 1.20 metres wide. Maximum 0.50 metres high. If cast on water or plastic pool, court is to be 1.20 metres square marked on the platform and casters must keep BOTH feet inside this area.

Targets: Land - 5 hollow disks, 0.76 metres diameter, made from plastic or metal, with turned-up edge 3cm high. Colour black, dark green, blue or brown. Disk No.1 to the left of the caster, 8 metres from the front edge of the platform, disk No. 5 to the right 13 metres from the front edge of the platform. Disks No's. 2, 3 and 4 in a straight line between No's. 1 and 5. Disk No.3 always placed directly in front of the platform. Distance between the centres of the targets to be 1.80 metres, all distances to be measured from the centre of the Front of the platform and the centre of the targets. Water or Plastic Pool- 5 rings 0.76 metres in diameter, placed between 8 and 13 metres from the centre point of the front of the platform or casting box 1.20 metres square marked on the platform. The nearest target to the left of the caster; the farthest to the right, and the rest at increasing intervals from the casting box. There must be a minimum of 1.20 metres and a maximum of 1.50 metres of free water surface between each target. Distances for the targets No. 1 and 5 to be measured between the centre of the target and the centre point of the Front of the casting box.

In this event there are three rounds: Dry, Roll Cast and Wet.

 CASTING DRY FLY ROUND

Caster must start with Fly in hand and one (1) rod length of fly line (leader not included.). Dry fly casting one try at a time on each target in the following order:

3 - 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 4 - 2 - 5

At least one false cast shall be made between each score or lay of the fly. All ten targets to be cast to in the consecutive order given, or as many as time permits. Fly line may only be shortened or lengthened during false casting, with the rod in motion, no stripping of the line from the reel when the rod is not in casting motion. Improper stripping or shortening of the line shall make the next cast non-scoring.

Time: 3 minutes and 30 seconds, time to begin when the fly hits the surface, in or outside the target for the first time. Last cast to be finished and fly to hit the surface before time expires.

Score: Land - Each hit in or on the target scores 6 points. Maximum score Dry Fly round on land 60 points. Water or Plastic Pool - Each hit in or on target scores 5 points. Fly should rest on the water until the judge calls score. Ticks count as casts but are non-scoring. Maximum score Dry Fly round 50 points. (Ticks to be called immediately before next false or delivery cast is completed.)

CASTING ROLL CAST ON WATER OR PLASTIC POOL

Definition of Roll Cast (or Switch Cast)

Roll Cast: With rod in upright position. Switch Cast: rod in side cast position.

A legitimate Roll (or Switch) cast: At the commencement of the forward movement of the rod to implement or execute the roll cast, the Fly and part of the leader MUST still be on or in contact with the water, otherwise the cast is deemed to be illegal.

To begin, the caster rolls or switch casts from the last dry fly target to the target nearest the casting box on the left side, and rolls or switch casts until 2 hits are scored. The caster then proceeds to the next target to the right and so on in clockwise order 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 until all five (5) targets are scored twice, or the judge calls time.

Time: Time limit I minute 30 seconds. Time begins when fly drops on the surface for the first time.

Scores: Each first hit scores 3 points; each second hit scores 2 points. Maximum score Roll cast round 25 points.

CASTING WET FLY ROUND

Having completed the Dry fly round of casting on land, or the Roll casting round on water or plastic pool, the caster rewinds the line to the reel to rod length, and starts the Wet fly round with a measuring cast to target No.1, extending line as required with false casting only. During such false casting, the fly shall not touch or tick the water in front of the caster. If the fly should "tick" the water this shall be deemed the measuring cast and the fly must be put down in the first ring on the NEXT cast to record a score. If the line is false cast instead of being delivered it is "no score" for every false cast and the next target changes accordingly e.g. if a "tick" occurs and the fly is not put down, but is false cast twice the caster would receive 2 "no scores" and his next target would be No. 3.

The measuring cast to be made within 1 minute from finishing last cast in the roll cast. When finished with the measuring cast the caster makes one Wet fly cast at a time to each target in consecutive order I - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5. Line may be pulled in to shorten length between targets No's. 5 and 1, but should the fly leave the water whilst retrieving line between targets No. 5 and No. 1, it will count as "No Score" and the caster will proceed to No. 2 target. 10 wet fly casts in all.

Time: Time limit 1 minute. Time begins when fly drops on the water on the measuring cast.

Scores: On Land - Each proper hit scores 4 points, maximum score 40 points. On Water or plastic pool - Each proper hit first round scores 3 points. Each proper hit second round scores 2 points, maximum score 25 points.

Highest possible score in Skish Fly Accuracy is 100 points.

Wet Fly Accuracy

How it works –

The rings are arranged as shown.

Five targets shall be connected together in a straight line at 1.5 metre intervals. The centre of the nearest one shall be 10.75 metres from the front edge of the casting box.

Casting:
1. Casting shall be single handed from within the casting box.
2. The competitor must commence with the fly in hand and one rod length of line out of the rod tip.
3. The line shall be extended to the nearest target by false casting.
4. During such false casting the fly shall not touch or tick the water in front of the caster. Penalty for doing so shall be 3 DEMERITS for each touch or tick that occurs.
5. There shall be no measuring cast.
6. No false casts shall be allowed after the first cast. If such occurs penalty shall be a no score cast for each false cast.
7. Three attempts shall be made in succession at each target, commencing with the nearest.
8. The fly may be retrieved on the water.
9. Scoring shall be as follows:

-       1st try perfect 5 points

-       2nd try perfect 3 points

-       3rd try perfect 2 points

Time: Time allowed shall be 3 minutes commencing when the fly first touches the water.
A penalty of 3 demerit points applies if the fly 'ticks' the water during false casting at the start of the event.
